First Presbyterian Church of Britton

First Presbyterian has one worship service on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.  The average attendance at this service is 114 people.  Worship usually includes leadership by a choir, a children's sermon, and participation by lay readers.  Every Sunday, worship is followed by coffee fellowship time.  Special services include Easter Sunrise with breakfast, Christmas Eve, and Maundy Thrusday.  Our Sunday school program has an enrollment of 47 children and youth, with average attendance of 25, plus an adult group.  Senior High fellowship meets regularly during the school year on Wednesdays.  Vacation Bible school is held during the summer.  During the summer of 2000, our church had 21 children attend Presbyterian church camps.  An adult fellowship group has been an important part of the lives of many members.  PW includes four circles with an average attendance of 8 each.  These meet monthly, and the entire PW meets bi-monthly for an afternoon program.  Twenty percent of the church's budget goes to support mission.  With 80% of that going to Presbyterian mission and 20% to local mission.

The church boards include a 9 member board of elders and a 9 member board of trustees.  The session meets monthly.  The trustees meet quarterly and are responsible for the care of the church building and manse.  Current session committees include worship, Christian education, finance personnel, nominating, stewardship, and evangelism.  Most of the committees are composed of representation from each of the boards, plus some congregation at-large members.  The church has part-time paid secretarial and janitorial positions.

This congregation has a rich heritage of members dedicated to supporting the church with their time and talents.  A substantial portion of the budget is dedicated to mission work.  The congregation ha members who are competent in administration, financial affairs, public service, and caring for church property.  The music portion of the service has always been an important part of its services, as we have had a pipe organ for over 50 years, and have been blessed with fine musicians.  We recently purchased an electronic piano that adds variety to our musical offerings.  Our church windows have been redone in the last 10 years.  In the last 5 years, we have re-carpeted the church basement, added a handicap accessible bathroom, and moved and refurnished the pastor's study and secretary's office, each with their own computers.  The manse has been remodeled, re-carpeted, and painted as well.  Much of the church maintenance and improvements have been accomplished with volunteer labor.  Several members have served the Presbytery of South Dakota as committee members.  Many members serve on local, school, cooperative, and governmental boards.  Be sure to look at the pictures of the church and manse!
